Professional Indemnity
Accountants
Although the Syndicate has written a number of the more well-known “second tier” practices and smaller regional practices in both a lead and follow-line capacity, it is best known for providing a more bespoke solution to the more unusual or harder to place risks within the accountancy profession. Such areas of exposure includes complex tax solutions, consultancy, insolvency, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, secretarial, payroll, expert witness and forensic. We have also provided “membership” solutions for accountancy and tax related associations and will continue to look at ways to provide simple transactional underwriting tools for these types of enquiries.
Architects
Although we have a book of traditional risks in this sector we are happy to consider more niche or specialist firms. We are keen to stress that policy coverage provides no restrictions for number of assignments in respect of collateral warranties, and as with engineers we have an extensive collateral warranty and appointment service that we can offer individual policyholders.
Associations and Institutes
The Syndicate underwrites a number of trading bodies, associations and entities designed to manage memberships in varied and diverse areas of business. We have a broad combined professional liability policy which will cover not only the Professional Indemnity risk for the services rendered but also provides executive liability coverage for the trustees, directors and officers. We have written associations in areas as diverse as will writing, funeral direction, motor sports, alternative therapy, radiography, expert witness, banking, nutrition, broking and local councils. In addition, we have written a number of affinity schemes for members of particular organisations, giving them Professional Indemnity cover through their Association.
Charities
We write specialist products for many charities whether they are involved with medicine and health, welfare, religion, pressure groups, poverty and aid, animals or other such not-for-profit sectors. Our product in this sector is extensive as it provides civil liability for the Professional Indemnity exposures, entity coverage within the trustees, Directors & Officers section of cover, and gives fidelity cover as standard.
Colleges and Universities
We write business in the education sector, and have targeted not only the more traditional schools risk but also medical colleges, science and technology colleges, universities and other risks where the exposure goes beyond failure to educate. We have a specialist training schools product for various types of therapies and where the establishment provides professional services to the commercial sector we can offer Professional Indemnity solutions, and look at emotive cover such as harassment, abuse, bodily injury and property damage. We also can offer medical malpractice coverage, governors’ and trustee liability and management or executive liability.
Design and Construction
We provide solutions not only for the more traditional contractors such as house builders and small commercial builders but also to the more difficult areas including industrial systems, piling and foundations, pipelines, concrete contractors and electrical and mechanical risks. We can look at both interior and exterior contractors and specialist bespoke firms.
Engineers
The Syndicate is well known as a primary lead insurer for engineers. We have strong ties to specialist legal firms that can advise policyholders on collateral warranties, appointment documents, novation agreements and other such documents and also provide in-depth risk management advice to our larger clients on request. As part of our reputation, we have always considered not only traditional risks in this sector but also “heavier” or potentially more exposed risks such as those in the offshore, marine, aviation, motor, industrial sectors and the like.
Financial Offshore
We write firms setting up and managing trusts and companies in territories including Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Turks & Caicos and other such offshore locations. We look at how companies manage the exposure to outside board directorships, and what constraints they have in terms of investment strategy. On the claims side we have worked with a number of clients to minimise exposure to potential tax liabilities and wrongful selling of investment products and have a high level of continuity with the companies we insure. We also write some specialist advocates and other legal advisors and work closely with them in conjunction with their own and other policyholders’ insurance.
Insurance Intermediaries
We have a large book of risks in the insurance intermediary sector including traditional insurance brokers, intermediaries managing binding authorities and some of the “heavier end” underwriting agencies and Lloyd’s brokers. We are well-versed in writing this class and have managed some large complex claims in the sector.
Media
We have an appetite for a broad range of clients in this sector. This includes but is not limited to advertising, media sales, broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, call centres, photography, corporate ID, graphic design, product design, direct marketing, printing, editorial, public relations, event organisation, publishing, journalism, purchasing of media space, mail shots, cold calling, research, marketing, market research, writing and other such activities.
Miscellaneous
We have a strong focus on the non-traditional businesses where the standard wording and rater approach does not always work. We are considering risks in areas such as agricultural consultants, search agents, counsellors, social workers, expert witness, funeral directors, interior designers, graphic designers, product designers, management consultants, risk managers, security consultants, mediators, shredding consultants, trainers, and other such risks. Where there is potential to put together an “affinity” scheme solution for many risks of the same type we can work with our brokers to provide a transactional solution and devise a product that fits.
Miscellaneous Construction
For risks which are not traditional, standard professions but are aligned to the construction sector, we have developed a specific policy which provides extensive cover including asbestos and pollution. We consider a wide range of risks under this policy including land surveyors, topographical consultants, acoustic consultants, ecologists, fire protection consultants, interior designers, landscape architects, planning supervisors, health and safety consultants, railway consultants, timber consultants, town planners, traffic consultants and other such firms.
Science
Our science product can be used for disciplines including accreditation and certification, assimilation, data interpretation and analysis, consultancy, engineering design, electronic design, forensics, innovative design, inspection, non-destructive testing, professional calibration and training. We are also keen to write pharmaceutical consultants, including regulatory consultants, laboratory testing and other research and development related risks.
Web Designers
We have developed a bespoke specialist wording having discussed exposure and risk with relevant clients for this sector, and reviewed standard market forms. This product is targeted at relevantly qualified individuals and specialist firms who undertake web related design (including graphics/flash, etc.), branding, animation, website integration, on-line programming, construction of transactional web-based platforms (e-commerce), hosting, registration of domain names, consultancy, on-line marketing including search engine optimisation, content management and other associated advice.
